what is wellbeing

As established by the WELL Building Standard, there are 10 environmental factors that affect a person's wellbeing.

Light's Impact on Human Wellbeing

According to the WELL Building Standard, illumination plays a critical role in human psychological and physiological health. The quality, intensity, and characteristics of light can profoundly influence an individual's:

  • Emotional state

  • Cognitive performance

  • Circadian rhythms

  • Overall sense of wellbeing

Key Considerations

Optimal lighting environments can:

  • Enhance mood and productivity

  • Regulate sleep-wake cycles

  • Reduce stress and fatigue

  • Improve mental clarity and focus

Scientific Perspective

Research demonstrates that exposure to appropriate light:

  • Stimulates serotonin production

  • Supports vitamin D synthesis

  • Helps maintain healthy hormonal balance

  • Positively impacts psychological outlook

The WELL Building Standard recognizes that light is not merely an environmental factor, but a fundamental element that can dramatically transform human experience within built environments.

The WELL Building Standard recognizes the community aspect as a crucial component of wellbeing. The WELL Community Standard, an extension of the WELL Building Standard, focuses on health and wellness at the district scale 5.

According to this standard, the community aspect of wellbeing encompasses several key elements:

  1. Social Interaction: The WELL Community Standard aims to foster high levels of social interaction and engagement, promoting a strong community identity 2.

  2. Inclusive Design: A WELL community is designed to be inclusive, integrated, and resilient, ensuring that resources are used effectively, equally, and responsibly to meet current and future needs 2.

  3. Access to Healthcare: The Community concept in WELL supports access to essential healthcare services 7.

  4. Diverse Population Needs: It aims to build a culture of health that accommodates the needs of diverse populations 7.

  5. Participation and Opportunity: The standard recognizes that collective and individual health outcomes are shaped by access to opportunities and the ability to participate and thrive within community systems and circumstances 8.

  6. Public Spaces: The WELL Community Standard focuses on impacting individuals not just within their homes or workplaces, but throughout the public spaces where they spend their days 2.

  7. Resilience: A WELL community is designed to be responsive to advances in scientific knowledge and technology, adapting to changing climates and integrating innovation 2.

By addressing these aspects, the WELL Building Standard aims to create communities that support overall health and wellbeing, extending the focus on wellness beyond individual buildings to entire districts and neighbourhoods 2 5
